Human Consciousness and the Traditional Amazonian Plant Dieta

David Slocum Hewson Talk Q&A

The Plant Dieta, is a discipline required of Amazonian shamans, healers, and apprentices who wish to learn directly from the plant spirits. It implies much more than mere dietary restrictions of avoiding salt, sugar, meat, and alcohol.  It is an extensive period of complete isolation for weeks or even months, and often the apprentice must fend for himself in the wilderness. The dieta is a complex and challenging practice.

Speculations on the Antiquity of Human Consciousness

Dennis McKenna Talk

While the definition of ‘consciousness’ remains a slippery concept, there seems to be little doubt that artistic expression – the ability to project abstract or aesthetic concepts into the real world -- is critically dependent on consciousness.   Only conscious beings create art.  So when it comes to addressing the question, ‘how old is consciousness?’ it seems that the only way to even hope to answer this question is to examine the oldest known evidence for human artistic expression.
